Outrigger failure caused crane to overturn onto Phenix City home; one hospitalized

CNAW Newsroom —
UPDATE: Outrigger failure caused crane to overturn onto Phenix City home; one hospitalized
Key takeaways
  • Outrigger failure caused crane to overturn onto Phenix City home; one person hospitalized in stable condition.
  • Heavy-duty Terex boom truck collapsed onto residential back porch, destroying roof and structural supports Monday morning.

Crews responded to an unusual and serious incident Monday morning in Phenix City.

CARE Ambulance, Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department, and Phenix City Police Department were called to the area of War Eagle Drive between North Tilley Drive and South Tillery Drive around 9:35 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026.

At the scene, a heavy-duty utility boom truck and crane manufactured by Terex Corporation was found overturned. The extended boom had collapsed onto the back porch of a residence, completely destroying the porch’s roof and structural supports.

The incident appears to have been caused by a failure of one of the truck’s outriggers, according to John Culpepper, owner of Strategic Land Management LLC.

According to Culpepper, the outrigger broke off at its base, leading to instability that caused the truck to tip over. Parts of the equipment, including electrical components, were also reported to have bent and broken during the collapse.

One person was injured in the incident and transported to the hospital. They are currently in stable condition.
