Key takeaways
  • Three Alabama men died after becoming distressed while swimming in Gulf of Mexico at Panama City Beach Friday evening.
  • Multiple agencies including Coast Guard and sheriff's office responded to search; all three swimmers were located but could not be saved.

A heartbreaking story is taking places on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in Panama City Beach after a vacation turned into a nightmare.

The incident began Friday evening shortly after 8 P.M. behind Watercress Condominiums along Thomas Drive at the beach when three men became distressed while swimming.

The search immediately began with agencies from Bay County Sheriff’s Office to Bay County Emergency Services, to the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisting. As the search progressed through the rest of the evening, all three swimmers had been located and taken to nearby medical facilities.

Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford confirmed all three male swimmers had passed away. Ford also confirmed the men were from Alabama, and had just arrived to Panama City Beach earlier Friday. Shortly after they arrived, they went swimming and that is when tragedy unfolded.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families, as well as all the first responders, dispatchers, and volunteers who aided in the search.
