A Phenix City man was identified as the victim killed in a Wednesday night crash.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, on U.S. Highway 80 heading eastbound near Summerville Road in Phenix City, involving two vehicles, one of which that caught on fire.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry confirmed 25-year-old Antonius M. Sumbry was pronounced dead on scene at 10:46 P.M.

Police said further investigation by the Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit revealed that a Volkswagen Beetle being driven by Antonius Sumbry was ‘traveling westbound when the driver lost control, crossed the median, and struck a vehicle traveling eastbound’.

Antonius Sumbry’s cause of death has been ruled to be from severe thermal burns and charring, with the manner of death being ruled accidental.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional.

This incident remains under investigation by the Phenix City Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit.
