Precautionary boil water notice issued for several Phenix City neighborhoods following major water leak

CNAW Newsroom —
Precautionary boil water notice issued for several Phenix City neighborhoods following major water leak

A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for parts of Phenix City after a severe water leak forced city crews to shut down the water supply to several neighborhoods on Saturday, June 28. The affected areas include 12th Avenue (from 14th Place to 17th Street), 14th Place, 15th Street, 15th Place, 17th Street, and the immediate surrounding area.

According to city officials, the necessary repairs to the water system required a complete shutoff of service, resulting in a significant drop in water pressure. This pressure loss could allow contaminants to enter the water system through potential cracks or joints, prompting the advisory.

Residents in the impacted area are urged to boil all tap water for at least three minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or making ice. As a precaution, any ice or stored water collected since the outage should be discarded immediately.

“Inadequately treated water may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites,” warned officials with Phenix City Utilities. “These organisms can cause symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and headaches, and they pose heightened risks for young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.”

Water crews are working to complete the necessary repairs, and bacterial testing will be conducted on water samples from the affected area. The boil water notice will remain in effect for at least 3–5 days, until two consecutive days of satisfactory test results are confirmed.

Updates will be provided as soon as the notice is lifted. Until then, residents are advised to continue boiling or using bottled water.
