Key takeaways
  • Mayor Richard Cooley of Smiths Station died peacefully Saturday, October 24, 2026, at age 83.
  • Cooley served over 20 years in city leadership and advanced community initiatives including storm shelter and infrastructure projects.

The City of Smiths Station is mourning the loss of Mayor Richard Cooley, who died peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2026, surrounded by his family.

City officials announced Cooley’s passing Saturday, remembering him as a dedicated public servant who spent more than 20 years serving the community as a City Council member and mayor.

“We are deeply saddened by this tremendous loss,” said Victoria Green, mayor pro tem for the City of Smiths Station. “Mayor Cooley loved this city and its people. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with his wife and family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Cooley had called Smiths Station home for more than 60 years. A 1965 graduate of Smiths Station High School, he served in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam, before pursuing a career in public education.

He earned degrees from Auburn University and Troy University and spent more than 40 years working in education. His career included positions as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent.

Cooley was also among the early leaders involved in the movement to incorporate Smiths Station as a city. He began serving on the City Council in 2004 and was appointed mayor in late 2023.

During his time in city leadership, Cooley helped advance several community initiatives, including the groundbreaking of a community storm shelter designed to accommodate more than 500 people, road improvement and paving projects, and expansions to the city's sports complex and green spaces.

His leadership also included efforts to support economic development, encourage small-business growth, strengthen partnerships with Fort Benning and pursue additional state and federal funding for city projects.

Beyond his work in Smiths Station, Cooley served as president of the Tan Son Nhut Association, a national organization for Vietnam War veterans who served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. His involvement reflected his continued commitment to fellow veterans and honoring military service.

Throughout his years of public service, Cooley emphasized transparent government, community collaboration and steady progress for Smiths Station.

The city said information regarding memorial services will be shared as it becomes available.

CNAW2News.com extends its condolences to Mayor Cooley’s wife, family, friends and the Smiths Station community.
