Smiths Station teen passes away after accident while cutting down trees

A Smiths Station teenager, who was going to be graduating in less than three weeks, has passed away after a tragic tree-related accident.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. says 17-year-old Hunter Waller, of Lee County passed away Thursday afternoon. Waller died from injuries sustained in accident while cutting/trimming down trees with a family member on May 2, 2024 around 5:45 P.M. We are told the tragic accident occurred at a residence on Wright Road in Phenix City.

CNAW2News.com spoke with the resident, Joshua Jones, who lives near the property where it occurred and witnessed the tragic accident and immediately called paramedics. Jones said, “My daughter knocked on my bedroom and said a tree fell on someone in our backyard and there is a man screaming call the paramedics. I didn’t even know my landlord had people cutting trees down so I was caught off guard.”

“My heart and prayers go out to him and his family,” Jones added. “It broke our hearts to have to witness it.”
