South Carolina man killed in officer-involved shooting identified

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Opelika.

Opelika Police responded to a vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car around 2:35 P.M. on June 11, 2024, on Interstate 85 near Exit 58.

As police responded, they were confronted by a subject armed with a knife and the incident ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting.

Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton identified the subject as 31-year-old Damion Ladeal Jones of Easley, South Carolina. The body of Mr. Jones has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Montgomery Medical Facility for postmortem examination.

“The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency/ State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) was called in to investigate in accordance with department protocol,” Opelika police said. “All evidence and videos will be turned over to SBI for their investigation.”
