According to the Opelika Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Wymond Drive at approximately 10:41 p.m. on July 16, in response to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, police encountered a 32-year-old male who was reportedly irate and armed with a firearm. The man barricaded himself inside the residence with a female and a 2-year-old child.

Due to the volatile nature of the situation, Opelika Crisis Negotiators and the Lee County SWAT Team were called to the scene to assist.

Authorities say the female was eventually able to safely exit the home. However, the child remained inside with the armed man as negotiations continued.

Despite efforts to peacefully resolve the standoff, the man’s actions ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The child was rescued unharmed, and the female also remained physically uninjured.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has taken over the investigation. Officials confirm that all evidence and body camera footage have been collected. Upon completion of a full investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, which will present the case to a Lee County Grand Jury.
