CNAW Newsroom —
Stolen vehicle recovery leads to multiple arrests, including wanted suspect
Key takeaways
  • Stolen vehicle recovery led to arrest of wanted suspect Elijah Smith with nine active felony warrants.
  • Four suspects arrested; Smith faced charges including meth trafficking, narcotics possession, and illegal firearm possession.

The recovery of a stolen vehicle led to multiple people being arrested Friday afternoon.

Authorities with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling the area of 37th Avenue at 14th Street for a stolen vehicle.

When deputies drove up on the vehicle, three of the four people standing around the vehicle fled the scene into an abandoned home.

Deputies quickly established a perimeter and identified one of the fleeing individuals as 37-year-old Elijah Smith, who was known to have nine active felony warrants.

Two of the suspects surrendered without incident. Deputies issued verbal commands to the third suspect still inside the home. When those commands were ignored, the MCSO K9 unit was deployed.

Following the sound of the K9 barking, the final suspect, Elijah Smith, exited the residence and was taken into custody.

Smith was wanted for Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, possession of schedule II narcotics, trafficking meth, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of possession of a firearm during commission of a crime, possession of drug related objects, and criminal use of an article with altered mark.

The Columbus Police Department recovered the vehicle, while charges from the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office remain pending against the four suspects.
