A horrific discovery inside a Columbus residence has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man and the shooting death of his mother and niece.

Authorities to a house on Hilton Avenue, just steps from the Columbus Country Club where they found two people with possibly multiple gunshot wounds on Monday, October 10, 2022, around 1:45 P.M.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed the 64-year-old grandmother, identified as Ursula Dietz, and 19-month-old granddaughter, identified as Elenor Dietz, were both pronounced deceased on scene at 2:10 P.M. The grandmother was found in the foyer, while the granddaughter was found in her crib. An arrest was made shortly thereafter. Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives responded to the scene and began the investigation into what led up to the shooting of the two.

Kevin Dietz was named a person of interest and taken into custody. Kevin Dietz is the son of Ursula Dietz and the uncle of Elenor Dietz.

Jail records indicate Kevin Dietz was booked into the Muscogee County Jail on the same day of the murder, October 10, at 10:59 P.M. He is charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. As of now, jail records indicate, he is being held without bond.

Ursula Dietz was loved by the Chattahoochee Valley community, specifically due to her work with Bare Ware Pottery Studio LLC, which she owned. The studio posted on Facebook hours after the murder scene was discovered that they would be closed for the rest of the week.
