Suspect dead after shooting officer during domestic call in Columbus

CNAW Newsroom —
Suspect dead after shooting officer during domestic call in Columbus
1 of 6

A deadly officer-involved shooting has left a suspect dead and an officer in stable condition in Columbus.

Columbus 911 Center received an emergency 911 call about a domestic disturbance in the area of the 4200 block of Earline Avenue, with a second caller reporting seeing a man shoot a handgun into the air. Officers from Columbus Police Department responded to the address where they encountered a man, identified as 30-year-old Reginald Lamont Grant II.

Grant ran from the officers, and they chased after him. During the chase, Grant shot an officer one time in the center of his ballistic vest. The officer returned gunfire, striking Grant multiple times. Grant was given medical treatment at the scene but subsequently died from his injuries. The officer was transported to a local hospital in Columbus where he has been treated and released.

While all-call officer assistance was given, a Columbus Police cruiser crashed into a civilian vehicle at the intersection of Manchester Expressway and Veterans Parkway. The officer involved in the vehicle crash was sent to a nearby hospital and was treated and released.

Police Chief Freddie Blackmon, along with newly hired Director of Community Affairs and Public Information Officer Brittany Santiago, and Command Sergeant and Assistant Public Information Officer Alan Malone, held a press conference at the scene.

Chief Blackmon said the officer will be held on administrative leave with pay until the investigation by Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents is completed. Once completed, the case file will be turned over to the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office for review. Anyone with information regarding this investigation may contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Columbus Field Office at 706-565-7888.
