A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon on Interstate 85 in Coweta County.

According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 85 South near mile marker 34 for a traffic violation.

Authorities said deputies had the driver exit the vehicle and were conducting a roadside interview when the suspect suddenly ran back to his vehicle and entered the driver’s compartment.

Deputies attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle and deployed a Taser, but officials said it had no effect.

During the struggle, investigators said the suspect retrieved a firearm from inside the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect.

Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said no deputies were injured during the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. The agency will provide any additional updates as the investigation continues.
