Teen killed, 3 others injured in violent first weekend of June in Columbus

CNAW Newsroom —
Teen killed, 3 others injured in violent first weekend of June in Columbus

The first weekend of June 2022 was a violent one in Columbus as two men were shot in separate incidents, teenager was killed at a gas station, and a child was shot while playing at a basketball court in a local apartment building.

The first shooting occurred on Fairfield Drive early Saturday morning where a man was shot at least once. The man was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional in stable condition.

The second shooting occurred around 2:00 A.M. Sunday morning on Coolidge Avenue where a 62-year-old man was shot. The man was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional in stable condition.

More than 12 hours later, police were dispatched to shooting call at 5757 Buena Vista Road, Shell Gas Station, around 3:54 P.M. Police and firefighters/medics found a male teenager suffering from injuries connected to a shooting. Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Elizabeth Allison was dispatched to the scene and pronounced the teen deceased at 4:00 P.M. The teen was later identified, after the mother was notified of the passing, as 17-year-old Rotravious Lofton and an autopsy has been scheduled for Lofton. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were also on scene and are still investigating.

Less than 3 hours later, Columbus police officers and firefighters with medics from Columbus Fire and EMS were dispatched out to Elizabeth Canty Homes off of Cusseta Road for reports of a child shot. An 11-year-old, who suffered wounds to the legs, was treated on scene and then transported by EMS to Piedmont Columbus Regional in an unknown condition. Viewers tell me the 11-year-old boy was playing at the courts near the playground with several other kids. The mother of the boy tells CNAW2NEWS.com that her child was transported to an Atlanta area hospital where surgery was done.
