Teen passes away 2 days after being shot on Chester Avenue in Opelika

A heartbreaking update in the shooting of an Opelika teen has been confirmed.

The investigation began when Opelika Dispatch received calls regarding a juvenile who had been shot in the area of Chester Avenue and Easy Street on September 15, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Officers located a 17-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived on scene.

The victim was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA. The victim, according to Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton, passed away today at the hospital.

After the shooting occurred, the suspect fled the scene prior to officers arrival, but Opelika Police Detectives investigation, with assistance of Columbus Police Department, Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, and citizens of Opelika, led to the arrests of two individuals in Columbus, GA on September 16, 2022.

Twenty-year-old Eric Stenson Jr. from Auburn, AL, and a 16-year-old juvenile have been charged with attempted murder of the 17-year-old victim. Both subjects will be extradited back to Opelika, AL and placed in the Lee County Jail. Those charges are expected to change.
