UPDATE: On Monday, Aug. 12, Officers with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit apprehended two individuals in Tuscaloosa in connection to a homicide investigation that occurred in Macon County on Thursday, Aug. 8. Elijah Rogers, 18, and Barthonia Howard, 18, both of Notasulga, were arrested and formally charged with Murder and Attempted Murder. Rogers and Howard were booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail with a hold for Macon County with no bond. Both Rogers and Howard will be tried as adults.

Original story: A tragic shooting in Notasulga that left one Loachapoka student deceased and another injured is under investigation by state authorities.

The shooting occurred in the town of Notasulga in Macon County in the evening hours of Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed two males, ages 16 and 17, were victims of the shooting. The 16-year-old old, who was identified by numerous posts across Facebook and family members as Javion Gary, died as a result. The 17-year-old suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound and will survive.

“Both were students at Loachapoka High School,” Jones added. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigations are investigating.
