Two Salem residents were killed in a head-on collision Friday morning in Lee County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Alabama Highway 169 and Lee County Road 140, approximately seven miles south of Opelika, at about 10:47 a.m. on June 12.

Troopers said 80-year-old William C. Smith Jr. of Salem was driving a 2013 Nissan Maxima when it collided head-on with a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 32-year-old Sir Steven Christopher Bush Jr. of Opelika.

Smith and a passenger in the Maxima, 47-year-old Ginger Nicole Smith McConnell of Salem, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Bush was injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
