What will the weather be at Friday night high school football games around Columbus and Auburn?
Friday night games across west Georgia and east Alabama will be dry and nearly calm, with kickoff temperatures from 59 degrees in Greenville to 65 in Columbus and Phenix City, falling into the mid to upper 50s by the fourth quarter.

Friday night is about as easy as football weather gets in this part of the world. Every town in the viewing area shows a zero percent rain chance at 7 PM and again at 9 PM, the wind sits at 5 mph just about everywhere, and the sky runs from clear to partly cloudy. The spread across all 19 counties at kickoff time is only 6 degrees, from 59 in Greenville to 65 in Columbus.
What changes from town to town is how fast the night cools off. With dry air behind the front, clear skies and barely any breeze, the ground gives up its heat straight to space after sunset, and the open country north and west of Columbus does that fastest.
Greenville has the coolest seats in the area: 59 around kickoff and 55 by the fourth quarter. Hogansville, home of Callaway, is right behind at 60 falling to 55. Around LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy play, it will be 61 at kickoff and 56 late. In those three towns a hoodie is not enough by the second half; bring an actual jacket and something to sit on, because metal bleachers pull the warmth right out of you.
Along the Chambers County line the numbers split. LaFayette and Chambers Academy in LaFayette, along with Valley and Beulah in Valley, start at 61 and slide to 56. Just down the road, Lanett and Springwood in Lanett stay 4 degrees warmer, 65 at kickoff and 59 late.
Columbus holds its heat best of anywhere. Kinnett Stadium and A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium should be near 65 at kickoff and still 62 two hours later, the smallest drop in the viewing area. Phenix City, home of Central, goes 65 to 60. Smiths Station and Glenwood in Smiths Station, and Russell County out at Seale, each run 64 down to 59.
In the Auburn-Opelika area, Auburn High and Lee-Scott sit at 63 and 59, while Opelika and Beauregard cool a degree further to 58. Loachapoka and Notasulga both go 63 to 59, and Tuskegee, where Booker T. Washington plays, starts a little cooler at 61 and only eases to 58.
South and east Georgia stays the mildest of all. Chattahoochee County in Cusseta, Marion County in Buena Vista, Randolph Clay in Cuthbert, Schley County in Ellaville and Webster County in Preston all show 65 at kickoff and 61 by the fourth quarter under partly cloudy skies. Stewart County in Lumpkin is 64 to 61, Taylor County in Butler and Quitman County in Georgetown are 65 to 60, and Central-Talbotton runs 63 to 59. Up on the ridge, Harris County in Hamilton goes 62 to 59 and Manchester 61 to 58.
In Alabama's southern corner, Eufaula is 63 falling to 58 and Barbour County in Clayton is 62 to 58, both under partly cloudy skies.
Leave the umbrella at home. Long sleeves are plenty for the first half anywhere, a jacket earns its keep after halftime from Columbus northward, and with the wind at 5 mph a kicker will not have to think about it.
Around kickoff → by the fourth quarter, on each school’s own clock.
No school or town by that name in the viewing area.
