Are storms expected in Columbus today and how cold will it get this weekend?
A cold front brings showers and a low-end risk of strong storms to Columbus and the rest of west Georgia and east Alabama into this evening, followed by morning lows near 42 degrees in Columbus Saturday and Sunday.

The coldest moment of the day in Columbus came at 6:03 this morning, and the thermometer at the Columbus Airport read 69 degrees. The normal low for November 4 is 49, and the normal high is 72, so the Valley's low temperature today finished within 3 degrees of what a typical November afternoon is supposed to reach.
The afternoon high climbed to 80 at 3:54 PM, still short of the 85 degrees recorded on this date back in 1961. With the dew point near 66 degrees, the air outside has felt closer to late September than early November.
That warm, humid air is the fuel for this evening. An upper-level storm over the northern Plains is dragging a cold front toward us, and moisture streaming up from the Gulf is running out ahead of it. The Storm Prediction Center has the area in a Marginal Risk, the lowest of its five levels, for isolated damaging wind gusts and the small chance of a brief, weak tornado into the early evening. Forecasters in Birmingham carry that same low-end risk for east Alabama through 10 PM. Storms that do form will be heavy rain producers, so expect water standing in the usual low spots. Columbus has picked up 0.26 inch so far today.
Friday a second front, mostly dry, sweeps through and pushes genuinely dry air into the Southeast. Rain chances fall to 10 percent or less from Friday into the middle of next week. Columbus should reach 78 Friday, then 72 Saturday and Sunday, with morning lows of 42 and 43. Birmingham's forecasters say parts of their coverage area may need a frost advisory as early as Saturday night.
Columbus has now collected 43.68 inches of rain this year against a normal of 40.56 by this date. Tonight adds to that total, and then the rain gauge likely sits empty for a while.
