Employee found dead inside piece of equipment at Phenix Lumber in second major incident in recent years

An employee is dead after being stuck inside a piece of equipment at a lumber company in Phenix City.

Phenix City Police Department and the Phenix City Fire Department responded to a call at 4 Cutrate RD., Phenix Lumber Company on August 23, 2023 at approximately 3:30 PM.

“Upon arrival on scene units were directed to the sawmill area of the plant,” police said. “Police were advised an employee was stuck inside of a piece of equipment.”

67-year-old James Streetman, a maintenance employee, was pronounced deceased on scene.

This is the second major incident at Phenix Lumber in three years. On May 27, 2020, Brandon Lee Vandyke was found deceased inside of a piece of equipment.

The Phenix City Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and the Phenix City Fire Department began an investigation that is currently on going. OSHA was notified of the incident and is conducting an investigation as well.
