An investigation is underway after a subject in police custody passed away, Columbus police and Mayor Skip Henderson said in a statement.

The incident occurred during the evening hours of October 5, 2023, involving two Columbus Police Department Officers and an individual placed into custody who later passed away after being transported to the hospital.

“The Mayor will have further comments at the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement posted on social media platforms on Friday night said. This investigation is being conducted with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, police said.
