Driver charged after fatal Smiths Station hit and run, multiple grass fires

A Phenix City man is behind bars and a Smiths Station man is dead following a chaotic crash. 

The chaotic scene began around 9 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, when a white pickup truck collided with a motorcycle. The white truck continued. 

The motorcyclist, identified as 42-year-old Joseph D Stewart was pronounced on scene at 9:45 PM by Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton

According to Smiths Station Fire Chief Blake Green, his firefighters responded to multiple grass fires between Love’s and Glenwood School on Summerville Road believed to have been caused by the fleeing driver.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed the fleeing driver and his white pickup truck were located a short time later. 53-year-old Craig Smith is charged with leaving the scene of an accident-death, DUI-controlled substance, and murder-reckless 

The investigation is underway by the Alabama law enforcement agency state troopers.
