We are learning new details about an active shooter at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Emergency first responders were dispatched to an active shooter 4:05 P.M. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in the engineering building, which contains classrooms and lab-space, at the university.
The University said they alerted students and staff of the active shooter at 4:22 P.M. and “immediately informed our community to shelter in place by locking doors, silencing phones and staying hidden until further notice.”
According to Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, two people were killed and eight others are in critical but stable condition. Those numbers could change given the fluid situation.
“We had multiple exams scheduled in that building from 2 pm to 5 pm,” the university said. “We can confirm that support services are on site. We have also relocated students to get support services at a secure location.”
At this time, a manhunt is ongoing for a “shooter or shooters”, according to Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara with Providence Police Department. The shooter is believed to be a male dressed in black and is believed to have exited the Hope Street side of the building.
The investigation by local, state, and federal authorities remains ongoing.
