Traffic pattern shift scheduled for Buena Vista Road interchange at I-185

Drivers in Columbus will soon see a major traffic change at one of the city’s busiest interchanges.

Contractors working on the Buena Vista Road interchange improvement project at Interstate 185 are scheduled to shift traffic into the new diverging diamond interchange pattern beginning Friday evening, May 29.

According to officials, the traffic shift is expected to take place from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, May 30, weather permitting. Advance alert signage will be installed ahead of the change to notify drivers.

The transition is being scheduled during overnight hours in an effort to minimize disruptions for both local and commercial traffic.

During the traffic pattern shift, the bridge at the interchange will be closed to all traffic.

Officials say interstate ramps will remain open, but only drivers turning right onto Buena Vista Road from Interstate 185 will be able to access the interchange. Drivers who would normally turn left onto Buena Vista Road from I-185 will need to follow a detour route using alternate exits before or after the interchange. Detour signs will be posted throughout the area.

Motorists traveling through the new diverging diamond interchange for the first time are encouraged to slow down and pay close attention to new traffic signals, lane markings, and directional signs.

Residents and frequent travelers through Columbus-Muscogee County are also encouraged to share information about the upcoming traffic change with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers to help drivers prepare for the transition at the busy interchange.
