A Columbus man has died following a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV Friday afternoon in Opelika.

According to the Opelika Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 2:12 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, on 2nd Avenue near North 3rd Street.

An Opelika police officer traveling on 2nd Avenue witnessed the crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV. The 66-year-old motorcycle driver was found unresponsive in the grass near the roadway.
Medics provided aid at the scene before transporting the man to East Alabama Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver and passenger of the SUV remained at the scene and were treated for minor injuries.

Photos from the scene show debris and apparent small pieces from the vehicles scattered in a grassy area. Investigators also marked numerous areas of interest with orange paint across the road and grass.
The roadway was temporarily closed while officers investigated but has since reopened to traffic.
The crash remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit.
