A 17-year-old is in custody following a shooting Sunday night in Tuskegee that left a 19-year-old dead and a 15-year-old critically injured, according to an update from AL.com.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Sunday in the Pruitt Court public housing community near Howard Road, AL.com reported.
The 19-year-old, identified as Jaden Ivey, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 15-year-old was critically injured and later airlifted to a hospital from Booker T. Washington High School, according to AL.com.
The 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody Monday morning in connection with the shooting.
AL.com reported that the preliminary investigation indicates the incident may have started with a disagreement involving teenage girls that escalated, with gunfire then coming from nearby males. That information remains part of the preliminary investigation.
Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee confirmed Sunday night that he had been briefed on the shooting in the area of Pruitt Street near Howard Road and said the Tuskegee Police Department was actively investigating.
“This is a heartbreaking night for our community,” Lee said. “There is nothing more painful than seeing violence forever change the lives and futures of our young people and their families.”
Lee asked residents to keep the affected families and the entire Tuskegee community in their prayers.
The shooting also prompted Macon County Schools to cancel classes Monday, September 14. Superintendent Dr. Melissa T. Williams-Myrick said she made the decision after speaking with the sheriff and chief of police regarding the incident, which involved students from the district.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” Williams-Myrick said.
As of publication, Tuskegee Police have not released a detailed public statement regarding the shooting. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
