CNAW2News.com founder and local crime reporter Colin Scroggins is stepping away from the news desk and onto the dance floor after being selected as a Star Dancer for Dancing Stars of Columbus 2027.

Scroggins announced Thursday that he will participate in the upcoming fundraising event, which benefits the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.

“I’m used to chasing breaking news, showing up at crime scenes and covering what’s happening across our community,” Scroggins said. “Now, I’m trading the scanner for a dance floor and the camera for some dance shoes.”

Scroggins has been paired with Joanne Davidson, a longtime dance professional who currently oversees Elite Dance Academy in Phenix City.

“I have been paired with the absolute pro herself, Joanne Davidson,” Scroggins said. “She has an incredible dancing career, so she has the experience. I have the enthusiasm.”

The Dancing Stars event raises money to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s work with families affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, while also supporting research.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 188,000 Georgians age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s, while approximately 391,000 family caregivers provide 789 million hours of unpaid care in the state. The estimated value of that unpaid care is $14.3 billion.

The Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter provides support services, education and resources for families and caregivers throughout the state, including the Chattahoochee Valley through its Columbus office.

As part of his participation, Scroggins has set a personal fundraising goal of $25,000.

“I’m dancing because I see Dancing Stars of Columbus as another opportunity to step outside of my normal role as a journalist, connect with the community in a different way, and help support a great cause,” Scroggins said.

He is encouraging CNAW2News viewers, community members, businesses, friends and supporters to contribute toward his fundraising goal.

Donations can be made through Scroggins’ Dancing Stars of Columbus fundraising page, where supporters can make a one-time or monthly contribution. Donations of $5, $25, $100 or more all count toward his $25,000 goal.
