The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northern Barbour County, southern Bullock County and central Pike County through 12:30 a.m. CDT.
At approximately 9:34 p.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the warned area. Between 3 and 5 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 2 to 4 inches possible.
The National Weather Service says flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
The warning includes Troy, Union Springs, Midway, Clayton, Banks, Pickett, Aberfoil, Boot Hill, Barbour County Public Lake Dam, Beans Crossroads, Linwood, Comer, Spring Hill, Shopton, Troy University, Troy Municipal Airport, Hawkinsville, Perote, Mount Andrew and Tanyard.
Flooding is possible along small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
The warning includes portions of U.S. Highway 82 between mile markers 183 and 194 and between mile markers 205 and 235, along with U.S. Highway 231 between mile markers 78 and 88.
The warning is based on radar-indicated flooding conditions.
Drivers are urged to use extreme caution, especially overnight when flooded roadways and other hazards can be difficult to see.
Do not drive through flooded roads. Turn around and find an alternate route if you encounter water covering the roadway.
