A potentially dangerous apartment fire in Lee County was quickly brought under control recently.

On March 23, 2026, the Southwest Fire Department was dispatched to the 100 block of Lee Road 660 following reports of smoke coming from a multi-family apartment building. The caller indicated smoke was coming from a single unit, and it was unknown if anyone was inside. Due to the nature of the call, the incident was immediately upgraded to a “working fire,” prompting additional units to respond.

Engine 711 arrived on scene in under two minutes with a crew of three firefighters. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke coming from the eaves of a single-story apartment building consisting of five units.

Firefighters quickly deployed a 1¾-inch hose line and made entry into the structure to begin an aggressive interior attack. Inside, crews encountered intense heat and zero visibility conditions. Despite the challenging environment, firefighters conducted a primary search ahead of the hose line to locate any potential victims.

Officials say crews quickly confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the building. Firefighters then located the source of the fire and were able to extinguish it, successfully containing the blaze to the original apartment unit.

No injuries were reported.

SWFD responded with two apparatus and six personnel, remaining on scene for approximately four hours before returning to service.

Several agencies assisted in the response, including the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department, East Alabama EMS LLC, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, and investigators with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
