Former Meriwether County Firefighter arrested for child molestation

CNAW Newsroom —
Former Meriwether County Firefighter arrested for child molestation

A Meriwether County firefighter has been arrested and charged with two counts of child molestation following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Mark Anthony Thompson, 69, of Luthersville, Georgia, was taken into custody on Friday, October 31, 2025, and booked into the Meriwether County Jail.

According to officials, the investigation began on October 14, 2025, when the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI in connection with allegations involving a firefighter with the Meriwether County Fire Department.

At the time of the investigation, Thompson was an active firefighter with the department. He has since been terminated after fire department officials were notified of the criminal investigation. The GBI said that the fire department has been cooperative throughout the process.

The case remains active and ongoing, and investigators are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.

Tips can be submitted to the GBI Regional Office in Columbus at (706) 565-7888 or to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 672-4489. Anonymous information can also be provided by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), visiting gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or using the “See Something, Send Something” mobile app.
