A 49-year-old man from Cusseta has been arrested and charged following a reported sexual assault early Monday morning in the rural Lee County community.

At approximately 6:58 AM CDT, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) received a 9-1-1 call that quickly escalated into a critical response. Though the female caller did not speak, LCSO Communications Officers remained on the open line and could hear what sounded like a woman in distress during an apparent sexual assault in progress.

Using cellphone location data, deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Lee Road 272 in Cusseta. They arrived on the scene within minutes, at approximately 7:06 AM, and detained 49-year-old Topciciain Lopez Vaughn, of Cusseta.

Deputies reported finding evidence at the scene consistent with a sexual assault. Vaughn was taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, where he was arrested and formally charged with one count of Sodomy in the First Degree.

Vaughn is currently being held in the Lee County Jail without bond, pending a hearing under Aniah’s Law, which allows judges to deny bail to individuals accused of violent crimes.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have additional information about this case to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at (334) 749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at (334) 215-STOP (7867).
