Will it rain this weekend in Columbus, Georgia?
Rain chances rise late Saturday into Sunday morning in Columbus and across west Georgia and east Alabama, but forecasters now expect less than a half inch for most of the area, with Sunday near 73 degrees.

The sun goes down behind the Chattahoochee RiverWalk at 6:51 now, and the air that comes with it has been running well ahead of the calendar. Columbus reaches about 81 degrees Thursday and about 82 on Friday, against a normal high of 74 for this date. The record high for October 29 in Columbus is 85, set in 2016, so we will finish a few degrees short of it.
The reason is a dome of high pressure strengthening overhead, with another area of high pressure parked over the Appalachians feeding a light northeast breeze into west Georgia and east Alabama. That northeast flow is dry air: Thursday afternoon in Columbus the temperature sat near 80 degrees while the dew point was only 43, which is why the warmth has not felt heavy. Forecasters at the Birmingham office flagged a low to medium fire weather risk Thursday afternoon on the Alabama side, with dry fuels and very little moisture to work with.
The pattern breaks down Friday night as a disturbance digs into the ArkLaTex and nudges the ridge aside. Showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder arrive late Saturday into Sunday morning from LaGrange and Hamilton south to Eufaula and Cuthbert, but the forecast has trended lighter. The Peachtree City office now puts the odds of more than a half inch of rain at less than 50 percent across the area, and says Sunday no longer looks like the washout it once did. Sunday tops out near 73 in Columbus with a 30 percent rain chance, then Monday and Tuesday turn pleasant again before a stronger system arrives Wednesday.
Columbus has already picked up 3.30 inches this month through October 28, against a normal of 2.52, and 43.60 inches since January 1, nearly four inches ahead of normal. If you have fall seed down in Phenix City or Auburn, this weekend looks like a drink rather than a soaking.
