Our automated weather channel is on the air around the clock: the radar, the temperatures, the week ahead — and when a warning hits the Valley, it stays with the storm.
What is the weekend boating forecast for Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula?
Sunday is calm and sunny on all three lakes, starting at 43 degrees at Lake Harding, 41 at West Point Lake and 49 at Lake Eufaula, with afternoons of 70 to 73 and no rain.

Stand on a dock at Lake Harding at eight o'clock Sunday morning and the surface should look like a sheet of glass. The forecast wind across all three of the Valley's big lakes on Sunday is 5 mph or less, and at two in the afternoon it falls to calm. Anything under about 15 mph keeps a small boat comfortable, so this is as easy a day on the water as the season is likely to hand out.
The other story is the swing. Every one of these lakes climbs close to 30 degrees between breakfast and mid-afternoon, which means the layers you need at the ramp will be in a heap on the back seat by lunch.
At Lake Harding, the Chattahoochee reservoir north of Columbus on the Georgia-Alabama line, Sunday starts at 43 degrees under full sun with a light 5 mph breeze. By 2 PM it is 72 and sunny with the wind gone to nothing. Rain chance for the day: zero.
West Point Lake, between LaGrange and West Point, has the coldest start of the three at 41 degrees at 8 AM, calm and mostly sunny. It also stays the coolest in the afternoon, reaching 70 by two o'clock. If you are launching from the LaGrange side, that first hour will feel noticeably sharper than it will down the river.
Lake Eufaula is the warm end of the Valley on both clocks. Eight in the morning there is 49 degrees, sunny and calm — eight degrees milder than West Point Lake at the same minute — and 2 PM reaches 73 under mostly sunny skies. Dock sitters around Eufaula and over toward Georgetown get the easiest morning of anybody.
The river feeding all of this is running on the quiet side of ordinary. Over the seven days ending Friday, the Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged 2,341 cubic feet per second against a normal of 2,967 for these dates, about 79 percent of normal and still inside the usual range. At West Point the week averaged 2,164 against 3,106, and below Lake Eufaula, near Columbia, Alabama, 3,394 against 4,463. Because the dams release water in pulses to make electricity, a single reading can triple inside a day, which is why week-long averages are the only honest way to describe it. Upatoi Creek near Columbus, which has no dam above it and simply reflects what has fallen, averaged 133 against a normal of 164 — below normal, and a fair reading of how dry the last few weeks have been.
What to bring Sunday: a jacket or hoodie you can shed, sunglasses, and a towel for the seats, because a calm, clear night leaves dew on everything. The sun is only reaching a moderate strength this time of year, but four hours on open water will still find pale skin. And remember the clock — sunset is at 5:44, so plan to be loaded and strapped down well before then.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
