Will there be frost in LaGrange and Columbus this weekend?
Frost is possible Sunday and Monday mornings in the northern part of the CNAW area, with 36 degrees forecast at 7 AM Monday in Hogansville and 37 in LaGrange and Greenville, while Columbus stays near 44.

Stand on a dock at Lake Harding at 8 o'clock Sunday morning and the air will be 42 degrees, calm and sunny. Stand in the same spot at 2 that afternoon and it will be 70. That 28-degree climb in six hours is what dry air does when there is no cloud and almost no wind to slow it down: the ground gives up its heat quickly overnight and takes it back just as quickly once the sun is up.
The reason is the big dome of high pressure settling over the Southeast behind this week's cold front. Air sinking inside high pressure dries out, which is why the National Weather Service in Peachtree City expects rain chances below 10 percent across north and central Georgia through at least early next week. Our seven-day run for Columbus bears that out: 70 today, 73 Sunday, 76 Monday, 75 Tuesday and Wednesday, 71 Thursday and 63 next Friday, with no day carrying a rain chance higher than 9 percent.
The mornings are the part worth planning around. Forecasters in Peachtree City say temperatures in the mid 30s and frost will be possible in portions of north and west Georgia on Sunday and Monday mornings, and the Birmingham office puts frost chances at medium to high for parts of east Alabama. In our area that means the northern counties first. At 7 AM Monday the forecast is 36 degrees in Hogansville and 37 in LaGrange and Greenville, against 44 in Columbus and 47 in Auburn and Phenix City. If you have tender plants in Troup, Meriwether or Harris County, cover them Saturday night and again Sunday night.
The soil has not caught up to the cold yet. Two and a half inches down it is still 61 degrees, which is why roots and septic lines will not notice this stretch even when the grass goes white. On rainfall, Columbus Airport has recorded 43.71 inches this year against a normal of 40.79 by this date, so the year is nearly three inches ahead. November is the opposite story: just 0.07 of an inch through the 6th, where 0.68 is normal. Anything you planted this fall is drinking what you give it this week.
