What to do
Plan ahead
Any address, any day. Up to 9 days out, it’s our forecast. Further out, an extended forecast from 30 years of weather here.
Our automated weather channel is on the air around the clock: the radar, the temperatures, the week ahead — and when a warning hits the Valley, it stays with the storm.
What is the weekend weather for hiking at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon?
Saturday and Sunday stay mostly sunny across the Valley's parks, with mornings in the upper 40s to upper 50s and afternoons from 64 degrees on the Pine Mountain ridge to 74 at Lakepoint State Park near Eufaula.

Stand on the Pine Mountain ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park at 8 o'clock Saturday morning and it will be 52 degrees. At the same hour at Chewacla State Park outside Auburn it will be 59. Seven degrees separate the two ends of a short drive, and that gap is the single most useful thing to know before you pick a trail this weekend: dress for where you are going, not for where you woke up.
The weekend itself is about as clean as November gets here. Saturday is sunny everywhere with rain chances of 1 to 3 percent. Sunday turns mostly sunny and a few degrees cooler, with rain chances only climbing to 5 to 9 percent, which is close enough to nothing that you can leave the rain shell in the car.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, Saturday starts at 54 and reaches 73 by 2 in the afternoon, though the wind picks up to about 10 mph along the open water, which takes the edge off the warmth. Sunday is 50 at 8 and 68 by 2 with the breeze back down to 5 mph.
At Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, look for 52 in the morning and 69 by midafternoon Saturday, with that same 10 mph afternoon breeze, then 48 and 66 on Sunday. Up the ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park and Dowdell's Knob, above Warm Springs and Manchester, Saturday runs 52 to 68 and Sunday is the coolest reading anywhere on the list, 47 at 8 in the morning and only 64 at 2 in the afternoon.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin splits the difference, 53 in the morning and 72 by 2 on Saturday, then 49 and 67 Sunday. Chewacla near Auburn has the mildest start both days, 59 and 72 Saturday, 54 and 67 Sunday. Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula is the warm corner of the viewing area, 58 in the morning and 74 in the afternoon Saturday, 52 and 69 on Sunday.
If you want the best of it, the window from about 11 to 3 is where the temperature sits in the 60s and low 70s with plenty of sun. If you would rather be cool than warm, the Pine Mountain parks are your Sunday, and the Eufaula and Auburn ends of the area are your Saturday morning if you hate being cold at the trailhead.
Dress in a layer you can shed. A fleece or a hoodie over a T-shirt handles the first two hours and will be tied around your waist by lunch, and the canyon floor at Providence and the shaded creek sections at Chewacla will run cooler than whatever the thermometer at your car says. One more thing to plan around: Columbus gets 10 hours and 48 minutes of daylight today and loses about another minute and three quarters each day, so the sun is going down just before 6 o'clock now. The December solstice is 48 days off, on Monday, December 21. Start earlier than feels necessary, and you will not be finishing the last mile in the dark.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
Forecast: National Weather Service, at each place. Wind and rain are the highest of the readings shown.
