What is the weekend hiking weather at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon?
Saturday and Sunday are both sunny across west Georgia and east Alabama, with 8 AM readings of 50 at Callaway Gardens and 53 at Providence Canyon warming to afternoons near 70, and Sunday turning completely calm.

Sunday is the pick of the weekend, and it is not because of the temperature. It is because the wind quits. At the RiverWalk, at Callaway Gardens, on the Pine Mountain ridge and down at Providence Canyon, the Sunday afternoon forecast is calm and sunny, with highs between 67 and 72. Saturday is nearly as good, just with a light breeze mixed in.
The thing to plan around is the swing between morning and afternoon. On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk through Columbus and Phenix City, 8 AM Saturday is 53 degrees and sunny with a 5 mph breeze, and by 2 PM it is 70 with the wind up to 10 mph. Sunday morning starts colder, 47 degrees, and climbs to 71 by mid-afternoon with no wind at all. That is a 24-degree change in six hours, so whatever you wear at the trailhead should come off easily.
Up at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Saturday morning is 50 degrees, warming to 67 by 2 PM with a 10 mph breeze. Sunday goes 45 at 8 AM to 68 in the afternoon, calm. A few miles along the ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs, it is the breeziest spot on the list: 10 mph both morning and afternoon on Saturday, with 50 degrees at 8 AM and 65 at 2 PM. That is the coolest afternoon anywhere we checked. Sunday on the ridge settles down to 45 in the morning, 67 and calm in the afternoon. Standing out at Dowdell's Knob with the view east, Sunday is the day you will not be fighting your jacket zipper.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin runs warmer and quieter: 53 and sunny at 8 AM Saturday, 70 by 2 PM with only a 5 mph breeze, then 47 and 71 on Sunday. Chewacla State Park just outside Auburn has the mildest mornings in the northern half of the area, 56 on Saturday and 53 on Sunday, with afternoons of 69 and 71. The warmest place to be all weekend is Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula, 56 degrees at 8 AM Saturday and 72 by 2 PM, then 52 and 72 again on Sunday.
Wear a fleece or a light jacket for the first hour or two and plan to carry it after about 11. Mornings in the mid 40s on the Pine Mountain ridge are cold enough for gloves if you are one of those people whose hands stay cold, and both days are dry enough valley-wide that boots will stay clean.
The one thing that will shorten your afternoon is the sun. Columbus gets 10 hours and 45 minutes of daylight today and is losing a little under two minutes a day, with sunset at 5:45 this evening and a touch earlier each day after. The December solstice is 46 days out, on Monday, December 21. Start your longest hike in the morning and be back at the car by 5:30, because the light goes quickly in the canyons and on the east-facing side of the ridge.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
