At 6:28 PM, the NYPD received multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter inside the building. Within minutes, authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, had entered the building’s lobby wielding a semi-automatic rifle and began firing indiscriminately.

Surveillance footage and eyewitness reports indicate Tamura arrived at the building in a black BMW and walked into the lobby heavily armed. One of his first victims was Officer Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer working a private security detail. Islam was fatally shot at close range.

Tamura continued firing into the lobby, striking multiple people. Near the elevator bank, he shot a second security guard before calling an elevator. When the doors opened, a woman stepped out. Tamura reportedly let her pass without harm.

Tamura then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, home to Rudin Management offices, Tamura opened fire again, shooting and killing a woman believed to be an employee. Moments later, he turned the weapon on himself, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators were able to trace Tamura’s movements and confirmed he had driven cross-country from Las Vegas, stopping in Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and Columbia, New Jersey earlier on July 28. He arrived in New York City shortly before the attack.

Tamura’s parked BMW was located near the building. Inside, police recovered a loaded revolver, a rifle case filled with ammunition, several magazines, a backpack, and prescribed medication. No explosives were found.

The NYPD confirmed a total of five fatalities, including Tamura. At least six more people were wounded in the attack, including one in critical condition.

Authorities are still determining Tamura’s motive, whether he had any connection to the building or its tenants, and how he obtained the weapons.

Anyone with information about Tamura or the shooting is urged to contact the NYPD tip line at 1-800-577-TIPS.
