Several fire agencies extinguished a brush fire on New Year’s Day in the Cusseta community of Chambers County.
The ground cover fire was first reported around 3:06 p.m. on January 1, 2026, in the 6500 block of County Road 388.
Fire crews from Huguley Fire Department, Beulah Fire District, and the Cusseta Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and discovered a large area burning with it rapidly spreading toward residential structures and portable buildings due to wind direction.
Nearly two hours after the initial call, the fire was contained and placed under control.
The Alabama Forestry Commission was contacted and created a firebreak around the perimeter to stop the spread of the fire, according to officials.
Smoke is expected to be present in the area for the next few days. An estimated 30 to 35 acres were burned.
