The Lee County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in a deputy-involved shooting Wednesday evening in the Loachapoka area as 36-year-old Wilder Cobon Gomez, a Guatemalan citizen.
According to Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton, Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene after an exchange of gunfire at a residence in the 900 block of Lee Road 188. His body has been taken into custody by the coroner’s office and will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences’ Montgomery Medical Facility for a postmortem examination.
Authorities say the incident happened around 5:34 p.m. Central Time as deputies and investigators with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a felony warrant for Gomez’s arrest on a charge of first-degree rape.
Officials said deputies were met with gunfire from the suspect as they tried to enter the home. Deputies returned fire, fatally wounding Gomez.
One deputy was struck in the upper arm during the exchange. Authorities said the deputy was in stable condition and was being flown to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said the investigation began earlier in the day after an adult female reported to a school resource officer at a Loachapoka school that she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted multiple times over the past several days.
Investigators said they gathered enough evidence to establish probable cause and obtained the arrest warrant before going to the home that evening.
Because the shooting involved law enforcement, the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, a division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the gunfire exchange.
Authorities have identified Gomez as a Guatemalan citizen, but officials have not confirmed his immigration status.
