A suspicious odor detected inside a bathroom at Loachapoka Elementary School prompted a precautionary response from school officials and emergency personnel Wednesday morning.
According to school authorities, a staff member first noticed the unusual smell and reported it to the School Resource Officer. In response, the Lee County Emergency Management Agency was notified and dispatched to the school to conduct an on-site analysis using specialized equipment.
Preliminary findings indicate the odor is likely the result of naturally occurring bacteria associated with recent construction work inside the building.
As a precaution, students were moved away from the affected area while officials assessed the situation. School leaders emphasized that there is no indication of any criminal activity tied to the incident.
Officials say they will continue monitoring the situation, but there is currently no threat to student or staff safety
