The LaGrange Fire Department is investigating an intentionally set fire that occurred late Monday night at a vacant home on East Mulberry Street.
According to officials, firefighters were dispatched at 11:26 p.m. on May 11 to a reported structure fire near the intersection of East Mulberry Street and Reeves Street. Engine 4 arrived first on scene at 304 E. Mulberry Street and discovered flames coming from the front porch area of the residence.
Firefighters quickly began attacking the fire while additional crews searched the structure. Investigators later determined the blaze was mostly contained to the front porch area, though some fire damage extended into a nearby room and portions of the attic. Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading further throughout the home.
Authorities said the residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The structure had boarded windows and doors, and utilities to the home had previously been disconnected. Evidence found at the scene indicated homeless individuals had been using the property.
During the investigation, responders located a homeless woman inside an outbuilding on the property. Officers made contact with her, but officials stated she is not considered a suspect in the case.
The fire has been ruled intentional, and the LaGrange Police Department is assisting the LaGrange Fire Department with the ongoing investigation.
No injuries were reported.
