During a town hall meeting Tuesday night, officials confirmed a traffic light is coming to a popular and dangerous east Lee County intersection.
District 3 Commissioner Jeff Drury announced the execution of plans to improve the intersection of Lee Road 230 (Bush Road) and Lee Road 240, which have been ongoing since July 20, 2025.
Study and Approval Process
The effort to install a traffic light began in mid-2025, when a traffic study was first proposed.
- July 20, 2025 — Proposal for traffic study received
- July 29, 2025 — Lee County approved the study
- September 24, 2025 — Traffic study conducted
- November 11, 2025 — Final study report completed
County leaders reviewed the findings later that month, confirming the need for improvements at the intersection.
Design and Funding Secured
By December 2025, engineering estimates for the project were received, and the county moved quickly to secure funding.
- December 10, 2025 — Cost estimate and design proposal received from Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC)
- December 17, 2025 — Project submitted to MPO for inclusion
- January 20, 2026 — Project approved for engineering and construction
- March 12, 2026 — Funding agreement received from ALDOT
Officials say the project is being funded through a combination of regional transportation funds and state support.
Design Phase Underway
Engineering firm GMC began field work on April 27, 2026, marking the start of the design phase.
Work is expected to continue through the fall, with plans for:
- Completion of field work and design between October and December 2026
- Final approvals from ALDOT before the project moves to the bidding phase
If no utility conflicts or right-of-way issues arise, the project could go out for bid by the end of 2026.
Construction Timeline
County officials estimate that contracts could be finalized between March and May 2027, with construction beginning shortly after.
Once completed, the new traffic signal is expected to improve safety and traffic flow at the busy intersection, which has seen increased traffic as the area continues to grow.
Officials say the addition of a traffic light at Lee Road 230 and 240 is part of a broader effort to address infrastructure needs across Lee County as development expands, while also reflecting a long-term planning approach.
