A Greenville man has been arrested and charged after investigators say a woman was shot in the head Sunday evening in a domestic-related incident at a convenience store parking lot in Meriwether County.

According to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:48 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026, to 5428 Luthersville Road after receiving a 911 call reporting a person had been shot.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Sunoco Station, also known locally as Gentry’s Country Store, near the intersection of Luthersville Road and Rocky Mount Road.

When deputies arrived, they found an adult female inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent single gunshot wound to the head.

Deputies secured the scene while personnel with Meriwether County Fire Rescue and EMS provided emergency medical care. Authorities said the victim was stabilized before being airlifted to an Atlanta-area trauma center for further treatment.

Investigators with the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division responded and launched an extensive investigation into the shooting.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators conducted numerous interviews, reviewed surveillance footage, processed evidence at the scene, pursued investigative leads, and executed search warrants as they worked to determine exactly what occurred.

The investigation ultimately determined the shooting was an isolated domestic-related incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

As a result of the investigation, authorities obtained warrants charging Deshontae Chaiman Clements, 41, of Greenville, with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

Clements was taken into custody and transported to the Meriwether County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

The victim remains hospitalized at an Atlanta-area trauma center and is listed in stable but critical condition, according to authorities.

Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith praised the efforts of investigators and first responders who worked through the night to gather evidence and determine what led to the shooting.

“We understand the public’s interest whenever a serious incident like this occurs, and we are committed to keeping our community informed,” Smith said.

Smith noted that investigators were initially working with conflicting information while the victim was receiving lifesaving treatment and traveled to the Atlanta trauma center to gather additional information.

“Investigators worked to verify the facts before releasing information publicly while also protecting the integrity of this active criminal investigation,” Smith said. “At no time was there believed to be an ongoing threat to the public.”

The sheriff also commended deputies, investigators, fire rescue personnel, EMS crews, emergency communications staff and law enforcement partners for their response to the incident.

The investigation remains active, and additional charges are possible as investigators continue to gather and evaluate evidence.
