Atlanta man killed after being struck by two vehicles on U.S. 280 in Lee County

An Atlanta man was killed Tuesday night after being struck by two vehicles while walking in the roadway in Lee County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The crash happened at approximately 9:57 p.m. on June 23 on U.S. Highway 280 near the 123-mile marker, about 13 miles northwest of Opelika.

ALEA officials said 86-year-old Cleavon Barton of Atlanta, Georgia, was walking in the roadway when he was struck by a 2025 Volvo tractor-trailer. Barton was then struck by a second vehicle, a 2013 Chevrolet Impala.

Barton suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer was driven by a 27-year-old man from Locust Grove, Georgia. The Chevrolet Impala was driven by a 20-year-old woman from Smiths Station.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. Additional information was not immediately available.
