Fatality reported following crash on U.S. Highway 280 East in Smiths Station

First responders are on the scene of a pedestrian-involved crash Tuesday night in Smiths Station.

The crash, which involved an 18-wheeler, occurred in the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 280 near Lee Road 286 around 10:55 p.m. eastern time on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

CNAW2News.com crews saw a tarp over a deceased individual.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, along with officials from East Alabama Medical Center EMS, Lee County Emergency Management Agency, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and Smiths Station Fire and Rescue are on the scene.

Both eastbound lanes are currently shut down.

Drivers heading eastbound toward Phenix City are being asked to detour by turning left on Lee Road 249, right on Lee Road 379, which will lead back to U.S Highway 280.
