A middle school football game scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Troup County has been moved to a different location following a reported potential threat.

According to the Troup County School System, school officials were alerted earlier Thursday to a potential threat involving the afternoon football game between Callaway Middle School and Gardner Newman Middle School.

School officials immediately investigated the report alongside local law enforcement. The district said that, at this time, no credible threat has been verified.

However, out of an abundance of caution, the game has been moved to Callaway Stadium. The game will still begin at 5 p.m.

The district said moving the game to Callaway Stadium will allow officials to utilize the stadium’s screening systems. Additional law enforcement officers will also be on-site to help provide a safe and secure environment for players, staff and fans.

“The safety and security of our students, staff, and families are the top priorities of the Troup County School System,” the district said.

The school system reminded attendees that the following security procedures are in place for athletic events at Callaway Stadium and across Troup County School System facilities:

• Clear bags only are permitted inside the game.
• Full-face masks or coverings are not allowed.
• No loitering is permitted before, during or after the game.
• Students who have been suspended, assigned to The HOPE Academy, or expelled are not permitted to attend school events.
• No re-entry is allowed once an attendee leaves the stadium.
• Everyone will be screened through a weapons detection system before entering the stadium.
• Elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by an adult during the game.
• High school students must present their student ID along with their game ticket upon entry.

The Troup County School System thanked the community for its understanding and cooperation as officials work to keep athletic events safe.
