What is the weather for Friday night high school football in Columbus, Auburn and LaGrange?
Friday night across the Chattahoochee Valley will be mostly clear and nearly calm, with kickoff temperatures from 60 in LaFayette, Valley and Opelika to 67 in Cusseta, Buena Vista and Preston, and 66 falling to 61 in Columbus.

Friday night is the kind of football weather people remember kindly. Skies will be mostly clear from Greenville to Eufaula, the wind will barely move a flag at 5 mph, and rain chances across the entire viewing area top out at 3 percent. Kickoff temperatures range from 60 to 67 depending on where you sit, and everywhere loses about 5 to 7 degrees between the opening whistle and the fourth quarter. The sun will have been down for well over an hour before any of these games begin.
The coolest stands in the area will be in Chambers County. In LaFayette, where LaFayette and Chambers Academy play, it will be 60 around kickoff and 54 by the fourth quarter, the chilliest late-game reading anywhere in the Valley. Just down the road in Valley, home of Valley and Beulah, look for 60 falling to 55. Opelika, where Opelika and Beauregard play, starts at 60 and holds up a little better at 56 late. Greenville sits at 60 and 55, and over in Clayton, Barbour County begins at 60 and eases to 55.
The warmest seats are in the southern and eastern counties. Chattahoochee County in Cusseta, Marion County in Buena Vista and Webster County in Preston all start near 67, with Buena Vista and Schley County in Ellaville holding 61 into the fourth quarter, the mildest late reading on the board. Stewart County in Lumpkin, Randolph Clay in Cuthbert, Quitman County in Georgetown and Taylor County in Butler all begin around 66 and settle near 59 or 60.
In Columbus, where Shaw, Hardaway, Carver, Jordan, Spencer, Kendrick, Northside, Columbus, Brookstone, Pacelli and Calvary Christian fill Kinnett Stadium and A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium on a given week, it will be 66 around kickoff and 61 by the fourth quarter. Across the river in Phenix City, Central is at 63 and 58. Russell County in Seale runs 61 to 56, and Smiths Station and Glenwood sit at 62 and 57.
In LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy play, expect 62 at kickoff and 56 late. Callaway in Hogansville runs a degree cooler at 61 and 55. Manchester is at 62 and 57, and Harris County in Hamilton is a bit milder at 64 and 59. Around Auburn, Auburn and Lee-Scott start at 61 and hold 57. Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee has the calmest air in the area with essentially no wind, at 62 and 56, while Loachapoka and Notasulga both begin near 62. Lanett and Springwood get the mildest Alabama start at 64, dropping to 58.
What to bring is simple. Leave the umbrella at home and pack a hoodie or a light jacket for the second half, especially in LaFayette, Valley, Opelika, Greenville and Clayton. Humidity is the detail worth knowing: at 93 percent in Clayton and Eufaula and 87 percent in Valley and Opelika, metal bleachers and seat cushions will feel damp to the touch, so a blanket between you and the bench is worth the trip to the car. In Cusseta, at 69 percent, the night will feel noticeably drier.
Around kickoff → by the fourth quarter, on each school’s own clock.
