Sunday on the Lakes: Breezy at Lake Harding, Warmest Down at Eufaula

What is the weather on Lake Eufaula and Lake Harding today?

Lake Eufaula reaches 72 degrees this afternoon with a 40 percent shower chance, while Lake Harding tops out at 66 with a 15 mph wind that will roughen the open water.

If you are choosing between the three big lakes today, the spread is wider than you might expect for one Sunday in the Chattahoochee Valley. Lake Eufaula runs a full 10 degrees warmer this afternoon than West Point Lake up at LaGrange. The trade-off is rain: Eufaula also carries the highest shower chance of the three.

Start at Lake Harding, the reservoir on the Georgia-Alabama line north of Columbus. At 8 AM it is 58 degrees with an east wind around 10 mph and a 21 percent chance of a passing shower under low cloud. By 2 PM it warms to 66, but the wind climbs to 15 mph. That is the point where open water begins to chop up and a small boat starts slapping instead of gliding. The coves on the lee side will be noticeably kinder than the main body, and the rain chance stays modest at 23 percent.

West Point Lake, between West Point and LaGrange, is the coolest water in the viewing area today. Eight o'clock brings 56 degrees, a 10 mph breeze and a 24 percent shower chance. The afternoon only gets to 62, and the shower chance edges up to 29 percent with more cloud than sun. The wind stays at 10 mph all day, though, so the ride will be easier here than at Harding even if the jacket stays zipped.

Lake Eufaula is the warm end of the map. At 8 AM it is already 62 degrees with a light 10 mph wind, and by 2 PM it reaches 72 — shirtsleeve weather on the dock. The catch is a 40 percent chance of showers that holds steady morning and afternoon. These are the scattered, move-through kind rather than an all-day soaking, but plan on getting rained on at some point and keep something waterproof within arm's reach.

One note for anglers thinking about current. The Chattahoochee is run by dams that release in pulses, so a single reading means very little, but averaged over the past seven days the river below Lake Eufaula near Columbia, Alabama ran about 4,900 cubic feet per second, a little above the normal for these dates. The Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged about 2,200 and the river at West Point about 2,600, both within the ordinary range for the first of November. Upatoi Creek near Columbus is the one running light, at about 79 percent of its normal flow, so the smaller feeder streams are thinner than the main river suggests.

Two things to pack. A windbreaker, because 66 degrees with a 15 mph wind off the water at Harding feels a good deal cooler than 66 on the bank. And a watch: the sun sets at 5:49 this evening, and we are losing close to two minutes of daylight every day now on the way to the December solstice. Plan to be back at the ramp well before the light goes.
