What is the weather Sunday at Callaway Gardens, Providence Canyon and Chewacla?
Sunday is dry and nearly calm across the area's parks, with 8 AM readings from 44 degrees at Callaway Gardens to 52 at Chewacla State Park near Auburn, and afternoons of 70 to 74 degrees.

Stand on the RiverWalk in Columbus at 8 AM Sunday and it is 47 degrees with the sun just clearing the trees and the air dead still. Stand in the same spot at 2 PM and it is 73. That 26-degree climb is repeating itself at every park in the viewing area today, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you decide what to wear.
The reason is the same high pressure that has kept the sky clear: dry air holds little heat overnight, so mornings fall hard, and then the same dry, cloudless air lets the November sun work without interruption. The dew point is sitting near 43 degrees, which is why the morning feels crisp rather than clammy.
Up on Pine Mountain, Callaway Gardens starts at 44 degrees with a 5 mph breeze and reaches 71 by 2 PM under full sun. The ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, above Warm Springs, runs a degree behind in the afternoon at 70 after the same 44-degree start — the coolest afternoon on this list, and worth knowing if you are headed out toward Dowdell's Knob where there is nothing to block the air.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin opens at 47 and climbs to 72 with a mostly sunny sky and calm air by midafternoon. Down in the canyons, where the walls shade the floor, the morning chill hangs on longer than the thermometer in the parking lot suggests, so the later you start the better.
Chewacla State Park near Auburn has the mildest start anywhere in the area at 52 degrees, five degrees warmer than the RiverWalk, and tops out at 73 with a light breeze. Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula is the warmest afternoon of the group at 74 degrees under a partly sunny sky, after a 49-degree morning.
Nowhere has a rain chance today, and the wind stays at 5 mph or less everywhere, which means nothing you wear has to fight a breeze. The practical answer is layers you can shed by 11 AM: a jacket or fleece over a short sleeve shirt, and somewhere to put the jacket once the air passes 60. The UV index reaches about 5 this afternoon, which is enough to color pale skin over a couple of hours, so sunscreen is not a summer-only item.
Watch the clock on the back end. Columbus gets 10 hours and 40 minutes of daylight today, and the sun sets at 5:43 PM. We are losing about a minute and a half of daylight every day, and that continues until the December solstice on Monday, December 21. A trail that felt generous at 4 PM in September now runs out of light in a hurry — if you want the last of the warmth at Providence Canyon or on the ridge above Warm Springs, be walking back before five.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
