Valley Forecast: A Dry Sunny Week Before the Season's Coolest Air Arrives

When does the cold weather arrive in Columbus this week?

After a dry, sunny stretch in the 70s, a Thursday cold front drops Columbus to a high of 59 on Friday with a morning low of 36.

Columbus has collected 0.07 of an inch of rain this month, a figure that would barely wet the pavement on the RiverWalk. Through Friday that left the city about three quarters of an inch behind where early November normally stands — and that is in a year that is still running roughly 3 inches wetter than normal overall, with 43.71 inches in the bucket at the Columbus Airport since January 1.

The reason is a dome of high pressure parked over the Southeast. Clear skies and almost no wind let the ground radiate its heat straight out to space overnight, which is why mornings have been bottoming out near 43 degrees in Columbus while afternoons still climb to about 75. Normal for November 8 is a high of 71 and a low of 48, so the afternoons are running a few degrees warm and the mornings a few degrees cool. The record high for this one date is 85, set in 1986, and the record low is 30, from 1959.

Forecasters at Peachtree City put rain chances below 10 percent through at least early next week. Tuesday and Wednesday both reach about 76 in Columbus. Thursday a cold front arrives with a 15 percent chance of a shower and a high near 71 — and behind it the week changes character. Friday's high in Columbus is 59 with a morning low of 36, and Saturday is 60 with a low of 35. The Weather Service calls it the coolest air mass of the season so far, with lows approaching or dipping below freezing across much of the area.

If you garden in Harris County, LaGrange or Phenix City, this week is the time to finish anything tender. The soil 2 inches down is still 59 degrees, but it will not hold that once those mornings arrive.
