Why are the nights so warm in Columbus GA this week?
Overnight lows in Columbus, Georgia are running roughly 8 to 16 degrees above the late-October normal of 51 degrees this week, with cloud cover holding in the day's heat while afternoon highs stay close to seasonal.

The odd part of this week's weather in Columbus is not the afternoon. It is the hour before sunrise.
Columbus Airport, where the official readings are taken, reached 80 degrees Thursday afternoon, 6 degrees above the normal high of 74 for the date. That is warm but not remarkable. The morning low was 59 degrees against a normal low of 51, and that is the number worth noticing. Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City expect the same split for the next seven days: highs close to seasonal, overnight lows somewhere between 8 and 16 degrees above average across west Georgia and east Alabama.
Clear, dry nights are what cool this part of the country off. Heat radiates from the ground up and out, and with nothing in the way the temperature slides steadily until dawn. This week there is something in the way. A deck of mid- and high-level cloud is drifting in from the west and will hang around into the weekend, absorbing some of that heat and sending it back down. The Columbus forecast carries lows of 62 tonight, 60 Saturday night and 57 Sunday night, against that normal of 51.
None of this is near the record book. In 78 years of records for October 30, the warmest reading in Columbus is 90 degrees from 1984 and the coldest is 24 degrees from 1952. Today's high near 81 is comfortably short of the first and nowhere close to the second.
The year's rain ledger is also running ahead. Columbus has recorded 43.64 inches since January 1, about three and a half inches more than the 40.06 inches normal by this date, and October finished the 29th with 3.30 inches against a normal of 2.61.
Watch Wednesday. That is when forecasters expect showers and storms to become likely, and Thursday morning's forecast low of 52 in Columbus would be the first night in this stretch that actually feels like the calendar says it should.
